Why do Modern Girls Attain Puberty Earlier?

It is a great concern of the modern moms why their daughters get periods at such an early stage.

“Compared to the time when I turned mature and got periods, why did my daughter attain maturity at such an early age?” wonders mom of an eight-year-old girl.

During the last few decades, there has been a sharp rise in the number of girls reaching puberty at younger and younger ages. Reports state that even some girls as young as 7 years-old have started menstruating. It has become a well-known fact that the current generation girls attain maturity at a very early age compared to the previous generation. This change is seen almost all over the world. Studies are still going on to find out the causes why young girls may be entering puberty earlier.

A recent pediatric study says that 10 percent of white girls have earlier breast development at the young age of 7, which is 3 years earlier than the norm that has been established.

There are various factors that cause this change. Modern lifestyle, social issues, hormonal changes due to emotions, environment and pollution, etc. affect the process of attaining puberty.

Some important causes for earlier puberty

1) Hormones

The main reason for girls having an early period is said to be the exposure to estrogen hormones from foods and other organic pollutants in the environment.

2) Environment

It is believed that bisphenol A or BPA in the environment is triggering early puberty. Some toxins in the modern cosmetics such as shampoo preservatives also are believed to affect the onset of female puberty at an early stage. The phytoestrogens found in plants also affect the body growth.

3) Pollution

Exposure to chemicals like phthalates through water and other sources can cause a large increase in breast development which is a major sign of puberty in girls. Pollutants in milk, certain food items and meat can also one of the factors causing early periods to your daughter. Plastics and insecticides that are more used in modern lifestyle can break down into chemicals similar to estrogen.

4) Obesity

The continuing epidemic of obesity in children due to modern foods hastens the process
