How To Get Album Quality Drum Tracks

How To Get Album Quality Drum Tracks

Why?

Nothing sounds better than live, high quality; warm, punchy analog drum sounds along side your recordings. Mark Zonder provides warm analog live drum tracks that breathe and give life to your songs.  Live drum tracks will add the dynamics that machine parts cannot produce.  The subtle nuances that live drum tracks provide cannot be produced by machines and will add a very human musical feel to your tracks.  Remember music is human.  Ghost notes and groove playing is at its best with live drum tracks.

Also the varieties of cymbal and drum sounds are unlimited with live album quality drum tracks.  Various cymbal sizes and styles can be used as a machine does not have this ability.

With Mark Zonder recording your live drum tracks, you also will have great room sounds of the drums as well.  A stereo pair of large diagram mics, run through a couple compressors gives you that big room feel for your drum tracks without having to fake it with a digital reverb that will simulate what Mark actually creates for your live album quality drum tracks.

A large diagram mic is placed behind Mark and will create a live track that can be compressed and really add some punch to your album quality drum tracks.

How?

Send Mark Zonder your basic song idea and he will come up with live album quality drum tracks that will fit your song and bring life and a deep musical feel to them.  Scratch tracks and a click is all I need.  I will record various ideas and send them to you via email as you can monitor the progress along the way.  I will do as many takes as needed to make sure you get the perfect album quality live track that you have only dreamed of to this point.  My service is based on the client getting exactly what they want and require for their music.  Samples of the live drum are also included if requested.  I will send to you the individual drum tracks as well as a stereo mixed track of drums, done by platinum award winning engineer Joe Marlett.  A high quality stereo compressed track is also included for you ability to add some extra punch to your live drum track during a mix.  Only the finest analog equipment is used, Neve, Summit Audio, Manley, Cal Rec, Vintage DBX etc….  Only high quality tube mics are used as well.  The combination of these two key pieces of recording equipment guarantee the warm, punch analog sound for your live drum tracks that all musicians crave, but most of the time have to settle for average sounding drums.  Not anymore, all musicians and songwriters can have high quality live studio drum tracks for their music.

When selling your music to either the public or a label, you will want a live band sounding track.  There is nothing worse sounding to a potential buyer is a drum machine track instead of that all important live drum sound.  The only thing your are missing are live drum tracks that will make your songs stand above the competition that will use a lonely drum

Snare Drum Recording Tips

Snare Drum Recording Tips

Recording The Snare Drum: First, make definite your snare drums tuning pegs are tuned befittingly. Its for the most part the drummers call. He will know when it sounds and feels precise. Your snare drum also has dissimilar sounds to it, depending on the location being hit by the drum stick. If your drummer is awkward, take it into concern and hit the snare head in all the unlike locations to audit its sound. You dont want to repair it in the mix or in the audio mastering
stage

As far as mic’s go, there are many to chose from, but for this discussion, I’m implying the good ole SM57 for the top of the snare head. Place it form a few centimeters to an inch above the edge of the snare head. You can get away with using just one mic, but why settle for good sound when you can have great sound! So the bottom of the snare head must be mic’ed. Chose a mic that is good at picking up the mid-high to high frequencies, like an AKG 451B small diaphragm mic. Due to the small size of this mic, its an out of this world fit under your snare drum. When using 2 mics for the snare drum or any other instrument, you need to test the phase. If the mic’s are out of phase, you can try moving the position of one of the microphones to get both microphones in phase with each other.

You may need to reverse the phase of one of the mic’s if you cannot get both mic’s in phase with each other. These two mic’s side by side are a great match because the SM-57 is great for the low-mids to mid range and the AKG is great for picking up the mid-high to high frequencies. Its a match made in “snare drum heaven”. EQ’ing The Snare Drum: (Note: These are just suggestions and guidelines, as nothing is written in stone. You must use your ears, as each song will need different EQ settings. Put oneself out using a high-pass filter set at 120Hz and under. 120Hz is a great starting point and then just slide the filter earthward for desired cut. Boost between 150 – 300Hz. This will fatten the snare drum up for you. Try cutting around 400 – 900Hz to eliminate some boxiness low end Boost between 5 – 7kHz for a crispness A boost between 9 – 15kHz will add some nice brightness to the snare. Just make sure it doesn’t interfere with the vocals in that range.
