  • Used Book in Good Condition

As country musicians LeAnn Rimes, Garth Brooks and Dwight Yoakam sell millions of records and put their names on the top of the pop as well as the country charts, country music is no longer thought of as merely southern, rural or American. It's a system more feudal than modern. This is a guided tour of the inner sanctum of country music's holy city.

That Urban Country Look

That Urban Country Look

Farmers up and down the land have fallen prey to a bizarre new fashion. Gone are the overalls, wellies and woolly hats, replaced as they are by a new-found taste for Saville Row tailoring and haute couture. The look represents a wholesale migration of city high fashion to the fields and lanes of bucolic Britain. Even the animals are beginning to register surprise at the sartorial turnaround, but farmer style gurus are dismissing it as jealous bleating.

Of course, this isn’t really happening. If you’re a country type reading this who’s just about to go online in fear of missing the wave of style, stop right there. But something equally interesting certainly is happening on the streets of British cities: the urban country look.

Shamelessly utilitarian in nature, the look draws heavily from a dressing down culture that has been threatening to sweep the nation since the late noughties. It can partly be explained by an economic downturn, although not purely in terms of financial wherewithal (the clothes aren’t necessarily inexpensive) but in trying to capture the spirit of the day. However such explanations provide only half the answer. After all, it’s during times of economic woe that people turn to their inner creativity to pull off boutique looks on a budget; think of any period of chic and you’ll probably see a gathering storm or ongoing crisis inspiring a luscious devil-may-care attitude. It could even be argued that it’s at times of wealth that the fashion houses have it easy and produce production-line looks aimed more at newspaper columnists than the street.

So how can the urban country look be summed up? Well the title does a pretty good job, but if you’re after details you have to think more of a blend of high street fashion with outdoor accoutrements. A pair of skinny trousers with a tweed jacket, sturdy shoes and a woolly hat can be seen as a sort of archetype, primed to be accessorised and modified. The downbeat air can even be enhanced by a little well placed staining or patching, and if you’re a male the clean-shaven face has to be considered a bit of a no-no if you’re trying to pull off the whole vibe.

An important aspect of the look is, as with any look, attitude. Remember, it’s only a style; you are still an urban fox, getting through day to day life in the big, bad city, surviving on your wits and your contacts. You don’t have to pretend you’re fresh off the 8:21 from Windmillville, pointing at buildings over three stories high and asking passers-by where you can get a ploughman’s sandwich (the answer is Boots, by the way).

Country style does encroach on the city street from time to time, so checking out a vintage clothing store can be a good and inexpensive way to start building your look. You’ll also find mainstream interpretations of the look on the high street (if that’s your thing) or, don’t forget, you can go straight to source and find some authentic

The Jungle Country

The Jungle Country

The dictionary meaning of the English word "jungle" is "a dense tropical forest". In the modern context other derived meanings are, "a jumbled assemblage of large objects" and "a place or situation where there is ruthless competition". This word actually entered the English lexicon from the Hindi language, at a time when India was part of the British Empire.

Original meaning

In modern Hindi the word jangal also translates to "thick forest" but in earlier periods the broader meaning was "a wild desolate landscape". The latter meaning is a reflection on the ancient roots of this Hindi word, which are to be found in the Sanskrit jangala (all short a's in pronunciation).

The several millennia of language development from Sanskrit to Hindi (and the other modern Indian languages), which passed through the intermediate Prakrit and Apabhramsa phases, need not be described in detail. But this long period of evolution is important for the word jangala, which in Sanskrit referred not to thick forests but a dry and desolate landscape, on which wild grasses and a deciduous forest may grow.

In the ancient Ayurveda, a text containing the earliest medical practices and lists of medicinal plants, the sages and wise men divided the regions of India into three distinct categories:

o anup (watery landscape)

o jangala (dry land)

o mishran (mixed terrain)

In that ancient period, when agriculture was becoming the mainstay of the economy, the anup and mishran regions were most amenable to human settlement. With the discovery of iron large stretches of forests were cleared, canals were built, and cities were constructed on the banks of rivers. This left the jangala regions with the largest expanse of untouched wild terrain----while only patches of thick forest were left in the other regions.

The actual Sanskrit words for forest were van, aranyak, kaanan and vipin----out of these van has been retained in official Hindi to mean thick forests. But in spoken Hindi it is jangal, which is used most commonly to convey that meaning. This is because while official Hindi is directly sought to be linked with ancient Sanskrit, spoken Hindi has evolved from the early medieval Apabhramsa.

In the article linked above, it can be seen that the Apabhramsa form of Sanskrit rose to prominence in the region of Rajasthan during the reign of the Imperial Pratihars. It is the northern portion of Rajasthan, a flat dry wilderness, which is identified with the term jangala. And it is because Apabhramsa became a pan-Indian language that every other contemporary language in North-Central-East India absorbed influences of the former. Among these was the term jangal for the wilderness, which passed on through the ages to modern times.

Cross Country Road Trip

Cross Country Road Trip

When my friend, Leslie, first got accepted to Stanford, she was elated. She had a green Volkswagen Jetta that she insisted on having with her while she was there. Rather than fight her on it, her parents agreed. Not only did they agree to let her have her car at college (she's from North Carolina), but they suggested that they take a cross country road trip to get it there! Leslie has always been the adventurous type, so to hear that she would be taking a cross country road trip with her quirky father to get to California from North Carolina, I couldn't really say that I was all too shocked. All I know is that if that was me, I probably would have opted to just have the car shipped there instead while I hopped on a plane flight.
My boyfriend is one of those people, but this is only because he is deathly afraid of flying. One too many bad flying experiences may have just grounded him for life. In any even, taking a cross country road trip is a great way to see the world or at least the country that you are living in. Not only this, but it gives you a chance to see sights that you might have not otherwise seen had you taken a plane ride. While flying is certainly more convenient (most times) than driving, there is something to be said for those who have braved the back roads that criss cross around the United States.
In addition to taking a cross country road trip, it is important to make sure that you really plan things out effectively. For example, always make sure that you have plenty of access to cash (not just credit cards). Not everywhere that you are going to stop is going to be as up-to-date as some of the places that you may be used to. Call hotels ahead of time and/or friends who live along the way, this way you can make sure that you always have a place to stay. Besides this, knowing that you have mini destinations can help to reassure you that you are near civilization should you ever get lost or feel a little lonely. You should also ALWAYS make sure that you travel with someone. This is an even bigger deal if you are a young woman. Unfortunately, women are still targets for many criminals and predators, so if you can, travel with a male associate or a group of friends.
Packing should be kept to a minimum if you can help it because, again, you don't want to make yourself look like a target for theft or other criminal activity. Bring a GPS unit and then bring a backup up-to-date road atlas just in case. Make sure that your cell phone is charged and ready to go. Last but not least, make sure that you have your car inspected before you go. Have the names and numbers of local mechanics along the way handy just in case you experience a problem. If you are super paranoid, you can even give a few of these places a call to let them know your intentions of possibly stopping by.
