Selectable diaphragm condenser microphone

Condenser microphone having a capsule with a cardioid pattern diaphragm on opposite sides of a back plate wherein each diaphragm is selectively activated via a switch to complete the audio circuit. The microphone employs two different diaphragm materials to produce two different sound reproduction characteristics.

A first diaphragm produces a "warm and lush" sound output, while the second diaphragm produces a "bright and airy" sound output. The microphone includes the use of a pair of light emitting diodes located behind the grill indicating which capsule diaphragm is activated. The dual diaphragm arrangement is mounted on a standard microphone body and includes conventional electronics for connection to an associated piece of audio equipment producing phantom power.

It is often desired that an audio system produce a wide variety of sounds depending upon the particular material being played, the location of the sound system and/or the mood desired by the listeners. Most often, these types of changes in audio output are generated and regulated by adjustments to the amplifier audio settings of the base and treble circuits, in addition to adjusting the volume control.

In the recording process, the diaphragms of the microphones generate the original sound. Diaphragms of different materials, conductive coatings, thicknesses or stiffnesses have a marked effect on the character of the sound that is ultimately heard by the listener. Recording engineers select a particular microphone to enhance, or make more pleasing to the listener the voice or instrument being recorded.

In a condenser microphone, the capsule includes a diaphragm spaced from a back plate. The diaphragm acts as one plate of a capacitor and the diaphragm vibrates when struck by sound waves, changing the distance between the two plates and therefore changing the capacitance. Specifically, when the plates are closer together, capacitance increases and a charge current occurs. When the plates are further apart, capacitance decreases and a discharge current occurs. A voltage is required across the capacitor for this to work. This voltage is supplied either by a battery in the microphone or by external phantom power source from the equipment to which the microphone is connected.

A 3-pin type output connector for a condenser microphone includes a grounding first pin and second and third pins for signals, provided on a connector base made of an electric insulator. Each pin contains a chip type inductor element that inhibits a high-frequency current, and includes a pin main body provided on the connector base, a cylindrical chip holder made of an electric insulator and having one end attached to an end of the pin main body located inside the microphone case, and a metal cap that covers the other end of the chip holder so as to be electrically insulated from the pin main body. The chip type inductor element is placed in the chip holder, and the pin main body and the cap are electrically connected via the chip type inductor element.

A microphone unit of a condenser microphone has a very high impedance and thus contains an impedance converter such as an FET (Field Effect Transistor) or a vacuum tube. Normally, a phantom power source is used for the condenser microphone. Amicrophone sound signal is output via a balanced shield cable for the phantom power source.

The operation described below is conventionally used as a method for preventing an electromagnetic wave from entering the microphone through the output connector 10. A condenser is connected between the grounding first pin E and the hot-sidesecond pin SH and between the grounding first pin E and the cold-side third pin SC; the condensers operate to short high frequencies. Further, the hot-side second pin SH and the cold-side third pin SC are connected to the microphone case such as theconnector housing cylinder 20 via an inductor that inhibits the entry of high frequencies.

The above conventional technique can inhibit the entry of normal broadcasting electric waves, for example, electromagnetic waves of HF, VHF, or UHF without any problems. However, the recent prevalence of cellular phones and the like hasincreased the opportunities to use an electromagnetic wave of a higher frequency near the microphone.

The three pins E, SH, and SC of the output connector 10 are located directly inside the microphone case. Consequently, a high-frequency current may enter the microphone case through these pins, the high-frequency current resulting from anintense electromagnetic wave radiated by a cellular phone or the like. The high-frequency current then reaches an electronic circuit including an impedance circuit, by radiation or propagation to generate noise.

In particular, noise is made when a high-frequency current coming from the hot-side second pin SH or cold-side third pin SC is electrostatically coupled to the electronic circuit. In other cases, noise is made when high-frequency magnetic fieldsgenerated by a high frequency current flowing through the microphone case are magnetically coupled.

Power circuit for a condenser microphone capable of automatically switching both internal power source and external power source without carrying out the switching operation of a switch.

A positive side output line comprises a power switch for turning off the positive side output line to selectively connecting it to a ground side output line; a first diode connected with an input direction from the external power source being a forward direction between the power switch and an output terminal of the positive side output line; and a capacitor connected parallel with said power switch and said first diode so as to bypass them, a series circuit comprising the internal power source, a second diode and a load resistor with a direction from the ground side output line to the positive side output line being a forward direction being connected between a connection point of the power switch and the first diode and the ground side output line.

The condenser microphone is provided with a microphone unit including diaphragms arranged opposedly at predetermined intervals and a fixed electrode, and is widely popularized irrespective of general public welfare or business because of high fidelity of sound and easy miniaturization thereof.

The microphone unit requires an electronic circuit for removing a voice electric signal according to a sound wave and a driving power source. The driving power source is roughly divided into a built-in type in which a power source is mounted on a microphone body and an external supply type. For the general public welfare, generally, the former is of a battery driving system, and the latter is of a plug-in power system in which power is supplied from apparatuses to be connected, for example, a tape recorder, a mini-disk recorder, a video cam coder, etc.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a power circuit for a condenser microphone which can automatically switch both an internal power source and an external power source, without carrying out troublesome switching operation of a switch, and which can further miniaturize a microphone body and can reduce the cost.
