How to Start a Recording Studio

How to Start a Recording Studio

A lot of people own recording studios these days. Mostly, they are home studios in a spare bedroom or basement. But some people even take it a step further. I have friends who rent out commercial space to build recording studios. And a few people build full-blown, professional studios with million dollar budgets. But face it - most people don't have that kind of money to start a studio. Here's a good way to start a small, but profitable, recording studio even in your basement.

I could spend all day telling you about acoustics and room dimensions, but let's keep it simple. You need enough space to fit all your gear, plus the band or artist you are recording. That might include drums, guitar amps, keyboards, and more. Or maybe you will use a smaller space and just record one instrument at a time. Big or small, you can make it work. Just be aware of how much space you have to work with. Then try to cut down on reflections, or echoes in the room. Hard surfaces, like drywall or concrete, will reflect sound all over the place. To control it, you need to break up that surface so the sound bounces randomly - not back and forth between two walls. This can be done with a little acoustic foam, or even blankets if you have a low budget. Just cover some wall space, and then test it out. Use the "clap" technique. Walk around the room clapping your hands every few seconds. Listen to the way the sound echoes. As you move foam around, or add more foam, that sound will change. Just keep working at it until it sounds good to you.

Now you need to get sound onto tape, or a computer these days. You probably won't be using any analog recording equipment, or recording to cassette tapes. That's good. You save space by using digital equipment. I recommend at least a 2 channel USB interface, plugged into a newer computer. Computers are built so fast these days, it really doesn't matter if you spend $ 350 or $ 3000 on a computer. Just get one that works, doesn't have a bunch of viruses, and fits your budget. A 2 channel interface, like the Digidesign Mbox 2, will give you room to record 2 microphones at once. That way you can track drums in stereo, then overlay guitars, bass, vocals, and whatever else. That's a basic recording, but it works. If you can afford it, go ahead and get a USB interface that has more channels. I like my TASCAM US1641. It has 8 mic preamps, with even more inputs on the back. Plenty of flexibility! Oh, and don't worry about software. You will get some kind of software with your interface. That should be enough to get you started.

A couple microphones, a set of headphones, and some cables will round out your studio. Get at least two microphones for your studio, and make sure they are in your budget. Get a condenser microphone for vocals or acoustic guitars, and a dynamic microphone for drums and electric instruments. You will add more to your collection later on, but that's enough to start. Get decent headphones right away. $

Having a Recording Studio

Having a Recording Studio

Recording is moving above and beyond the old fashioned tapes and the need to perform everything live.  The recording industry as well as technology individuals are beginning to produce new capabilities within the industry that are creating opportunities, not only in the sound technology, but also in the abilities to record.

Overall, recording capacities are moving into better and simpler characteristics.  Before, having a recording studio would take thousands of dollars worth of equipment, each which was specialized and would not offer all of the capabilities.  Today, recording equipment is moving into condensed capabilities with sharper abilities to use equipment in an effective way that captures sound.

One of the innovations that is at the forefront of recording is digital capabilities.  This includes the ability to record everything through a digital sound, typically produced from the mixing board.  The concept of digital sound is one that captures the sound waves at a faster rate.  The result is that it creates a clearer sound and allows for more to be picked up with the sounds that are being captured in the area.

With the digital capacities are also new mixing boards that are being used.  This is effective for those who are building home recording studios and need compact options.  Some of the mixing boards contain capabilities to record, mix and master without the software or computer.  This allows for remote capabilities in recording and the possibility to have a simpler process in the recording process.

Not only are these options growing in recording, but so are the electronic capacities of instrumentation and instrumental sounds.  As more is found out about the way in which recording works, newer options for capturing the right types of sounds that sound either electronic or digital are also coming into place.  There are continuously newer options to get the correct sound, grow with the right capacities and have more options for putting together an arrangement.

Along these lines of improvement are the new capacities for equipment.  Microphones, amplifiers, pre-amps and the equipment that stabilizes the sounds, both in the recording studio and to capture the sounds, are now coming in more condensed packages as well.  You can now find all in one amps or microphones, all which are built specifically to record and to capture the right sounds without the problems of playing live.

How to Make Money with Your Recording Studio

How to Make Money with Your Recording Studio

Make Recession-Proof Money with Your Recording Studio

For a lot of studio owners right now, it's hard to make ends meet.  With rent prices going up, and less people willing to splash out money on studio time, it's very hard to maintain a recording studio in today's society.

Built Your Recording Studio in Hard Times???

If you've built up your recording studio, it's cost you a lot of time and money. If you're renting space to hold your recording studio, it's going to keep costing you money!  How are you going to keep up with these costs?  How can you make a profit off of all the money that you invested??  You need to find out ways to make money with your recording studio AND FAST!!  But don't panic, that is where we're here to help!

You can watch the video at: http://urbanmusicschoolblog.com/how-to-make-money-with-your-recording-studio/

First of all, you need to make sure that the rent money for your recording studio is paid each month!  You want to get artists in to do recording sessions to pay for this.  You should try and get these sessions done at the beginning of the month so that they're out of the way.  You should undercut your competition to do this.  Maybe even do special offers for just the first week only to get your rent paid!  So then, you can concentrate on making PROFIT with your recording studio for the rest of the month.

Don't Undercut Yourself!

Do not undercut yourself too much; otherwise you will be working your socks off just to break even. It won't last! DON'T PRICE YOURSELF OUT OF THE GAME!!  You want to undercut your competition to a point but not past that point!  Your clientele want quality for a REASONABLE price.  If you feel you're being forced to lower your prices too much to get clientele, then you should probably have a look at your quality of service.  This doesn't necessarily mean investing money in your recording studio more; this could mean improving yourself as a sound engineer, improving your team members' skills, or even improving your hospitality.  But if other recording studios are clearly getting better sound than you, then invest in new equipment or software.

You want to try and create fluent clientele, so make sure you're versatile in all the music production services that you offer.  Do albums, EPs, demos, mix-tapes, radio adverts, voice-overs, music for film and music for television.  Anything to do with your recording studio, or your music production, you should offer it!  Just make sure you offer your music production services at a low price and with high-quality, and you'll get loads of clientele for your recording studio from all over the place AND MORE MONEY!!

For more examples watch the video.

You want to be professional and make the artist feel comfortable.  A lot of artists decide on which recording studio they go to
