How to Build a Recording Studio

How to Build a Recording Studio

Whether you are creating a recording studio at home or in another location, the goals of reducing sound transmission and enhancing acoustical quality remain the same. A recording studio refers to a room where you intend to practice a musical instrument or record music, and the recommended soundproofing treatments differ from those recommended for a room where a band practices. Building a recording studio involves the steps of containing noise within the room, blocking outside noise from entering the room and finally enhancing the acoustics within the room for optimal sound quality.

Like many types of soundproofing projects, the first phase in developing a recording studio involves isolating the room by preventing sound transmission through the walls and ceilings of the room, to prevent both outside noise from bleeding into the room and sound from inside the studio from being transmitted out. Wall sound reduction treatments can be incorporated into the construction phase of a room, or may be easily applied in rooms with existing walls. The key to effective wall soundproofing is establishing a disconnection from the wall surface and increasing the density of the structure. Common studs in adjoining rooms allow sound waves to travel freely between rooms, which is what will be negated through the establishment a separated, denser structure.

Adding density to a wall simply involves covering the surface with a mass loaded vinyl soundproofing membrane, such as dB-Bloc. The added density will restrain the wall’s ability to vibrate, thus inhibiting its tendency to transmit sound into and out of the studio. Secondly, a disconnection from the walls must be established to prevent sound waves from being transmitted easily through the walls to adjoining rooms and beyond. Creating such a disconnection involves first attaching horizontal furring strips to the wall in regular intervals from ceiling to floor, about sixteen inches apart as a general recommendation. Next a new layer of drywall will be affixed to the strips, essentially creating a second wall layer. The technique of increasing density and establishing a disconnection serves to reduce or eliminate sound transmission through the walls of the studio. Ceilings also provide a common surface for sound transmission throughout different rooms of a home or building. Ceiling soundproofing treatments are available in a variety of styles, and a soundproofing professional can recommend the appropriate ceiling treatment that is sufficient for the unique characteristics of your studio.

Obtaining optimal acoustical quality within a recording studio is the ultimate goal. Thus, a studio should also be treated to reduce sound reflections within the room in order to improve acoustical quality in the studio. Sound absorption panels are easily installed solutions that are designed to be positioned throughout the room to capture sound and reduce reverberations. Again, it is

Choosing a Recording Studio for Your Project

Choosing a Recording Studio for Your Project

Choosing a recording studio for your project is not merely a matter of looking for the studio that offers the lowest hourly rates. As an artist, you have to find a studio that will give you the perfect balance between affordability and sound quality.

So how should you go about choosing a recording studio for your project?

One of the first things you should do is to look up the nearest studios and compare the following factors:

· Equipment – They do not need to have every single kind of recording equipment in the world since you'll only need the basics in most cases. However, make sure that those that they have will produce release-quality recordings.

· Sound engineers – Find out the level of experience of their sound engineers. Remember, even the best equipment will just go to waste if your sound engineer is no good. An experienced sound engineer will be able to help you produce the best possible recording, as well as save you time since they know what they're doing. Of course, this will help lower costs, especially if you are paying the studio on hourly rates.

· Size – Obviously, you should find out a studio that will be able to accommodate everyone that needs to be there. Try as you may you just won't be able to fit in an entire orchestra in a small room. Just make sure you don't rent too big a studio as well to avoid wasting money.

While doing research, you might have missed some recording studios that is worth considering, so make sure you ask for recommendations from fellow downtown artists. Artists that play Soho should be able to give you feedback on the studios they've used in the area.

Once you have narrowed it down to a handful of promising studios, visit each studio to get a feel of the place. Do not settle for a studio that you do not feel comfortable in because it will affect your creativity and productivity level.

To be totally honest, the hype around DUB Turbo actually kept me from buying the damn thing. In fact, the reason I actually ended up buying it was totally by accident, here’s a quick story about why I decided to buy DubTurbo (as well as where I found some discounted pricing):

OK, Storytime…

I was struggling to get some beats together, I had a vocal studio session looming in the future and I was running behind… Way behind.

Panic started to set in. You see, I actually HAVE access to a few expensive drum machines, keyboards, computer programs etc. My problem was that I couldn’t get all of my “pro” gear to sync up with my computer and (worst of all) some of the stuff that I thought was “done” sounded horrible.

Normally I consider myself a pretty calm individual but this was causing me panic attacks. I couldn’t sleep, which made matters worse… I ended up getting bronchitis and couldn’t work at all for a few days. The studio session was a mere 2 days away and I had virtually NOTHING.

I knew I needed help. My friend (who wishes to remain anonymous) has been making great beats for a few years now, a few papers and a national magazine had recently picked up on him and he is now making a good name for himself in the industry (not to mention some good $ $ and a very cute girlfriend, funny how that works eh?). Anyway, I was sure he could help.

When I called him he had just finished a big project and was chillin, he also said wanted to show me his new “super secret” toy.

I walk into his studio (filled with basically all of the gear you have EVER heard of) and there he is, punching out a beat ON HIS COMPUTER KEYBOARD!!! When he was done, he spun around and I could see what his new “Super secret” was… None other than DubTurbo.

We both sat down and quickly got to work. I really couldn’t believe how easy this thing was to work. In the time it would have taken setup a session on other expensive software we were already done with one song and on our way to the other. Dub Turbo was becoming my new best friend, not to mention lowering my blood pressure quite a bit.

Soon DUBTurbo began to feel really really natural. He had told me that he was hanging out with his girlfriend that afternoon so he left me alone to keep on working. The first song I did by myself own only took 34 minutes from start to finish. I tested how it sounded compared to some of my favorite tunes… It sounded great! Later my friend explained it was because DUBTurbo has very hi quality output (44.1K to be precise).

How to Choose the Perfect Music Recording Studio

How to Choose the Perfect Music Recording Studio

Only another artist could understand how much work really goes into creating a quality piece of music; the time that's spent learning the craft and the creative energy that goes into actually coming up with a new and unique piece of music that's worth recording. If there are other artists involved in a collaborative effort it multiplies everything, there is a whole lot of dedication and commitment involved.  So when the time comes to record the goal is to find the best recording studio for the money.

What is it that you should look for when you begin scouting for a facility to do your recording in? One attribute that should be a priority when looking for the right recording studio is if they have a qualified on-site recording engineer with an established reputation for producing quality products. One with a good reputation for having an even temperament and being easy to work with because the last thing you need is to get involved with some temperamental prim donna. Having someone that is involved in the process but isn't willing to make the effort to get along with others will only lead to problems. You may end up feeling rushed to finish your project just to get out of there and this in turn can only serve to have a negative effect on the quality of your final product.

The perfect recording studio will also have a separate well insulated control room; a control room that's equipped with the latest state-of-the-art equipment and features that allow for maximum options and flexibility.

Another thing to look for is overall quality design with an eye towards comfort.

A place you can relax in can only help to expedite the creative process.

Acoustics is also incredibly important, so look around and ask them what they've done to optimize the acoustics.

A nice and roomy full-size recording room is also a big plus to look for. One with at least a few isolation booths where you can set up instruments like drums, so you can better control the type and volume of sound that's coming out. Soundproofing is also just as important as acoustics in the recording room, so before you make your final decision you need to check that out as well to make sure that's up to your standards.

Then if you don't have the means for transporting your equipment to and from the studio ask them if they have access to a van or truck, and if so perhaps they can be of some assistance in helping you moving your equipment.

Lastly there's the issue of pricing that has to be taken into consideration and recording time in a top-rated studio is definitely not cheap. It all comes down to how much money you have to spend on your recording project and keep in mind that, just
