Songwriting Tips For the Guitarist – Read a Book

Songwriting Tips For the Guitarist - Read a Book

As a guitar player that writes songs, you already know that ideas for new songs are not in an endless supply. There are times when the ideas just dry up like a puddle of dew in the hot desert sun.

But sometimes, just by taking a look at the world around us with a fresh perspective, we can spurn a whole new crop of ideas that we never imagined.

One way to do that is by reading. A wealth of new song ideas can be found in a good novel, or even a newspaper or magazine.

The key is to develop a heightened sense of awareness.

Quite often we aimlessly read a story or article, in a detached state of mind, and later, have a hard time recalling exactly what we read.

But by training the subconscious mind to always be on the "lookout" - to "turn on the radar" to be in tune to new and fresh ideas - a wealth of song titles, hooks, lines and concepts will start to flow seemingly out of nowhere.

At first this will take some extra effort. It requires reading the story or article, and trying to focus on what the storyline is, and also paying attention to any song ideas or lines that jump out. It's really a matter of reading with "two minds".

As you do this, you will also find that your reading time is extended. An idea or line will pop out at you, and you will stop to write it down, and then attempt to pick up your train of thought where you left off.

But after a while, keeping the "radar" turned on, and reading in this heightened state of awareness will become second nature, and before long your song idea notebook will be brimming with a cornucopia of new ideas to draw from the next time you pick up your pen and your guitar!

How to Write a Good Song – 3 Steps to Easy Songwriting

How to Write a Good Song - 3 Steps to Easy Songwriting

Songwriting is something some people can do off the top of their head and others struggle just to find words that rhyme. Now I believe songs should be from the heart, but if you're struggling, this article is going to give you a step by step process of how to write a good song.

1. Know what you're writing about

Don't blindly write. Just like when you write a story or a paper, you outline it. Outlining helps you keep on topic and makes sure you don't stray away from the main point. Well, the same is true for song writing. Choose a topic and stick with it.

2. Put your chorus together first

Since your chorus is the main theme of the song, write it first. Take your topic and put together a chorus that is both catchy and repetitive. You may say, repetitive is bad, but think about some of the songs you hear on the radio today. Repetitive is what gets stuck in your head and it's what people enjoy.

3. Make the Verses point towards the chorus

Once you feel like you have a strong chorus with a good theme, use the verse to write the story. Imagine your chorus as the backbone, and then your verse is the muscle, bone, and skin of your song. Let it flow into the chorus. In a sense, build up to the chorus.

Imagine this. The first verse tells a story and leads either down (or up) to the chorus. The chorus is a simple repetitive theme or kind of like the climax. Then the second verse leads back up (or down--whichever it didn't do the first time).

Using these 3 simple tips, you should have a good framework for putting a song together. Once you get comfortable you can start throwing in a bridge and making more complex songs.

Good luck in your song writing.

Still having trouble writing that song?

Songwriting contest: A medium of expressing yourself

Songwriting contest: A medium of expressing yourself

A songwriting contest is basically a contest in which people submit their songs to be evaluated by judges. The winners are usually rewarded with prizes such as cash, gifts or even contracts with music recording companies. It is a great way of making a start in the song writing carrier. These contests do not discriminate between starters and the professionals and give equal opportunities to both. A songwriting contest can be the turning point for people who have a passion for writing songs and want to make a career in the music industry. It’s a priceless opportunity to have your songs listened by the right people.

Writing songs is an art and thus requires creativity and passion for the same. Like any other form of art, songwriting must be done from the soul. There should be originality and emotions in the song. Every song must be written with true feelings and emotions. The song should convey some message or story to the audience so that it leaves an impression in the mind of listeners. Always try to be creative and natural when writing a song but don't make the lyrics too complex to understand otherwise it will lose the interest of the listeners. The best way would be to carry a pen and paper with you at all times so that you can pen down an idea as soon as it occurs. This way you can compile your best songs and be a prominent contender in the songwriting contest. Always remember that writing songs is an art and it can never be learned from any book, it can only be practiced.

If you are planning of participating in the contest, here are some tips for you:

1. The song should be original and from the heart. The song should be filled with feelings and emotions. If the song is not written with feelings then it is unlikely that you will impress the judges.

2. Try to be as creative as you can be. When you are sending your song make sure that it is your original work.

3. The lyrics of the song are very important. You cannot win for creating a good melody unless you accompany it with great lyrics that express something meaningful. Your lyrics should be able to tell a story rather than just some words compiled together that rhyme.

Songwriting contest is not a new thing. They have been around since a long time. Nowadays, there are various online contests which provide a platform to the aspiring songwriters.

California song contest is the one of such contests whose mission is to create an environment where talented songwriters can be recognized and given a lifetime opportunity to be discovered by the music industry. The best aspect about Songwriting Contests

The best aspect about Songwriting Contests

There are a lot of benefits of entering a free songwriting contest. However, some writers are skeptical to participate and send their songs for a variety of reasons. While competition usually brings out the best in aspiring songwriters, you need to consider the other side of the coin a well. If you are considering one or more songwriting contests to submit your music to, you should be aware of several factors.

First and foremost, it is important to determine the reason for taking part in the songwriting contest. Although there are several other entries the judges will be hearing, you should never compete against anyone else when writing your songs. A better approach would be to compete with yourself in a healthy way that improves your creativity and writing skills. It is not about comparing your song to someone else's song; rather it is about realizing and achieving your own personal goals.

The eminent judges will consider several parameters and make a decision in every songwriting contest and you will have no control over their decision. However, you can control your response to the judges and the situation. Every time you take part in a songwriting contest or submit a song, you are opening the doors to feedback and potential criticism. Generally the judges are music industry professionals, so their feedback can be very valuable. Whether the decisions of the judges go in your favor or not, it is always helpful to be receptive to new perspectives. Listen to their advice and think of it as a learning experience.

The songwriting contest offers other advantages as well. The aspiring contests will offer exposure to your music. The best part about these songwriting contests is that, not only winning song gets the prize, but all the entries get heard, and you never know who will be listening to your songs. Often executive producers from film and television come as judges to select the winners. They look for music to place in various television shows and pull songs aside as they hear them. That kind of an event will lead to multiple contacts and unlimited opportunities for all of the contestants.

Homework before participating in a songwriting contest

Homework before participating in a songwriting contest

Songwriting is an art. We often try to pen down our thoughts and give a musical touch to it. However, writing your own song as a work of art is a totally different concept. If you wish to participate in a songwriting contest, you need to know some basic stuff like notes, chords and scales before you start.

The very first thing that you need to know about songwriting is creating a mood. On the basis of the song's emotional content, you may wish to create a specific kind of background for the song. Some song writers tend to stick to certain places and times to create and generate the perfect mood. As a second option, you can carry a pen and a paper everywhere because an idea might strike suddenly out of nowhere. If a tune comes to your mind, hum it over and over again so that you have it memorized or record it.

Creating a tune needs some serious attention, thought and peace of mind. A song which has the most familiar chord arrangements may sound recognizable to the listener and hence build an immediate connection with the listener. Similarly, a song with atypical chord arrangements may sound very unique and hence, might show up to be different. So, before creating your own song for a songwriting contest, select the music and melody to suit the kind of listeners it is being targeted at or being made for.

Make sure the words of the song have the power to touch the hearts of millions. For that, the lyrics should be properly articulated and emphasized to convey the contextual meaning of the words by using appropriate melodies to deliver the lyrics. A song writer needs to understand that while the lyrics can be modified to suit the note, it is never suggestible to modify a note to suit your lyrics unless it is the line of the century. If you are skeptical about the way it sounds, try writing lyrics for some popular and common tunes until you have mastered the art.

An important aspect of songwriting is the title. The title is vital in making a song popular. Opt for a title that creates an effect in seconds and keep the listener anticipating about what's coming next.

Now that you know the basic tips of songwriting, come up with a song that creates a deep impression on the listener.

The California Songwriting Contest is an international songwriting contest open to amateur and professional songwriters alike. We are open through the entire year and are always accepting your songs. We are able to do this because the California Song Contest features 3 sessions during every year instead of just one or two like many of the other song contests out there.
