A reciprocating compressor is a machine that makes use of an internal mechanism to compress a gas by means of positive displacement. This process is repeated constantly, thereby producing a steady supply of compressed gas.

Reciprocating compressors are usually driven by electric motors or gasoline and diesel powered engines. Smaller do-it-yourself (DIY) versions and commercial units installed in factories or plants are typically electrically operated while those designed for mobile use are engine driven. Large industrial compressors may feature multiple cylinder designs and often include the option of utilizing any number of those cylinders depending on demand. Small domestic models typically have only one cylinder, which feeds compressed air to a storage tank or directly into the supply hose.

These machines are used to compress a variety of gasses that include air, hydrogen, oxygen, refrigerants, and hydrocarbons. The gasses they compress may be fed directly to another part of the process or into a storage tank for later use. Air compressors are generally used to drive pneumatic tools or equipment while other gasses are compressed as part of an industrial process such as air conditioning, chemical production, and crude oil refinement. The reciprocating compressor is typically utilized where high compression ratios are required with fairly low flow rates. The use of a reciprocating compressor is usually restricted to applications where the gasses involved hold very little moisture.

A refrigeration compressor is an essential part of what makes refrigeration technology work. A compressor is like a small motor — it consists of a piston, a crankshaft, and a connecting rod that connects the piston to the crankshaft. Similar to the engine in a car, a refrigeration compressor produces compression over its stroke as it is operated.

As the piston moves up and down in the cylinder, it will compress whatever is in the bore of the compressor. This essentially forces anything in the bore of the compressor into a smaller area through the use of the compressor technology. In a refrigerator, this is used to push refrigerant through. A refrigeration compressor is run by electricity, and the compressors have an electric motor component that powers the piston and crankshaft in order to compress the refrigerant being used.

Each refrigeration compressor has a cylinder head at the top of the compressor assembly. There are also valves in the cylinder head of a compressor. One set of valves, called intake valves, allow refrigerant to enter the cylinder, and the other set of valves, known as exhaust valves, allow refrigerant under pressure to leave the cylinder.

A capacitor is like a small battery that stores an electrical charge and allows the compressor to use some of that charge when it starts up to help it begin to compress the refrigerant and do its work powering the system.

Some refrigerators have independent compressors for the refrigerator component and the freezer component. These are widely thought to be more efficient, but dual compressor refrigerators are generally more costly than those with a single compressor. In any case, compressors do not run constantly, but instead automatically turn on intermittently when necessary to ensure the appropriate air temperature inside the refrigerator.

These divide the incoming audio signal into multiple bands, with each band being compressed independently from the other.

The beauty of this is that with full band compressors, that we have been discussing till now, the whole signal is treated, so when a peak is detected, the whole signal is compressed and so other frequencies are also subject to compression.

Multiband compression only compresses the frequency bands chosen, so a more fluid and less abrupt result is gained. Instead of having one peak trigger the compressor into compressing the entire signal, the multiband allows for individual bands to be compressed.

On some compressors, you even have the option of selecting bands that will not undergo any treatment.

In essence, a multi-band compressor comprises a set of filters that splits the audio signal into two or more frequency bands.

After passing through the filters, each frequency band is fed into its own compressor, after which the signals are recombined at the output.

The main advantage of multi-band compression is that a loud event in one frequency band won't trigger gain reduction in the other bands.

Another feature of the multiband compressor is that you are offered crossover points. This is crucial, as you are given control over where to place the frequency band. Setting these crossover points is the heart of the compressor and crucial in processing the right frequency spectrum with the right settings.

For example: if you are treating the vocals in the mid range but put your low end crossover too far into the middle range, then the low end compression settings will also affect the mid range vocals.

Multiband compression can either be a friend or enemy.

It all comes down to how you use it and when. It can be a great compressor for controlling problematic frequencies, or for boosting certain ranges in isolation to others.

Audio Compressors do more than just change the dynamic range of a song or track. Audio compressors do allot more than you think they do and I’ll explain what some of these things are.
When using a compressor during tracking (hardware compressor if your recording into a program like pro tools or sonar) it will allow the engineer to record the track at a higher level than normal. Like if the compressor decreases your signal level by 4dB on the hottest parts, the entire tack can be recorded 4dB higher to make up the reduced gain. This will make the soft passages of the track hotter as the loud passages will be least affected. While the compressors really control the loud passages, the final result is an increase in the soft passage levels.
A lead vocal track that is compressed will sound more up from in the mix, when compression is used correctly.
Bass guitars are most always compressed. Because of the low frequencies it possesses. If not tamed, the low frequencies will saturate the overall mix level and this can make your song level artificially hot. When the bass guitar is compressed correctly, the low will be tamed and your mix can be mixed and mastered at a proper level.
The pumping effect is an effect of a compressor when the level control of reducing the gain as the amplitude passes the threshold. Then it turns it back up when the signal falls below the threshold.
The breathing effect is the same as the pumping effect, but the breathing effect is heard with high frequency airy sounds only.

A compressor is an mechanical volume control that turns loud parts of a music signal down when the VCA see’s the signal larger than a certain level that was set by the user. This makes us able to bring the complete volume of the song up and in return, the softer sounds get louder. In return, we can print the entire track with a louder signal level. Its a fantastic tool for recording instruments with a wide dynamic range.

The 5 Parameters of a Compressor:
Threshold is the point where the compressor starts recognizing the signal’s amplitude. When the amplitude rises above an established, it will start to act in a way defined by the attack time, release time and ratio settings. There are 2 ways that the threshold works. It can boost the signal up into the threshold or it can be moved down into the signal. In both the ways, the only part of the audio that gets processed is the part that goes above the threshold.. After the signal goes above the threshold, the VCA turns down the part that is above the threshold, leaving the rest of the signal unaffected.

Attack Time controls the amount of time it takes the compressor to turn down the signal after it passes the threshold. The attack time need to be adjusted just right. If its set to fast, then the compressor can turn down the transients and that can cause the instrument or song to lose its life.It can also effect vocals if its set to fast by making the ‘t” and ‘s’ sounds disappear. The opposite can happen if the attack time is set to slow. It will exaggerate the ‘t’ and ‘s’ sounds because it will pass through uncompressed because of the long attack time.

Release Time is the time it takes the compressor to let go or turn the affected signal back up when It gets below the threshold.

Fast release times work very well with the fast attack times and slow release times work very well with the slow attack times. Release settings are crucial, because if its set to fast, it can boost noise that is between the notes and if its set to low, it can compress a quieter note that follows the note the was above the threshold.

Ratio determines how extreme the VCA action will be. The ratio is a comparison between what goes through the threshold and the output of the VCA. The first number of the ratio will indicate the increase of how much dB will result in 1dB of increased output. The higher the ratio is, the more compression there is.

Output Level makes up for reduction of gain that the VCA causes. If the was reduced by 5dB, the output level can boost the signal back to its original level.
