The Road to Racial Equality

The Road to Racial Equality

A geographer from the University of Georgia, Matthew Mitchelson, has come up with an interesting statistic, as reported on CNN: there are at least 777 streets in the U.S. named for slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King. Naming a street in someone's honor is a superlative example of respect and admiration--in other words, an individual has really "arrived" when a street bears his name.

The street-naming trend may be an indication that we are closer than you might realize to achieving King's dream of a color-blind society. The fact that hundreds of streets bear King's name show that public officials throughout the nation recognize the contributions of King and they are determined to honor them.

Interestingly enough, 85 percent of the streets named for King are in the South. Surprised? You really shouldn't be. The South is hardly the cauldron of racial tension the media would have you believe. If the South is paying more homage to King than the North is, it's a clear indication that the media stereotypes of the typical white male Southerner are hopelessly faulty. According to CNN, Southern homage to King ranges from MLK Circle in Tupelo, Mississippi, to MLK Boulevard in Tampa, Florida.

And there's another significant stereotype that needs to be shattered: the idea that neighborhoods bearing a Martin Luther King street are filled with crime and poverty. As Matthew Mitchelson, that University of Georgia geographer, pointed out to CNN, "The dominant stereotype is that these are crime-ridden, low-income areas that are just full of blight."

However, the March issue of Social Science Quarterly clearly shows that the stereotype just isn't true. As Mitchelson told CNN, "In terms of employment, Martin Luther King streets are actually much more vibrant than streets in general." In fact, Martin Luther King streets, on average, offer more work addresses than that symbol of American enterprise, Main Street. In fact, MLK thoroughfares are brimming with schools and government offices, causing Mitchelson to remark to CNN, "Statistically, it's off the charts."

What's more, Martin Luther King streets are far from symbols of segregation. In Cincinnati, Ohio, Martin Luther King Drive winds through neighborhoods that are white, black, and evenly populated. One Martin Luther King street in Seattle, Washington, boasts a number of businesses owned and operated by Asian-Americans.

Liberals would like us to believe that there have been virtually no advancements for African-Americans since the 1960s. This is because politicians, both white and black, can use the "politics of oppression" to keep their jobs. They attempt to win black votes by claiming that the state of affairs for blacks in America are worse than ever--and that they will be the welcomed agents of change.

But a lie cannot stand for long. Everyday in America, whites and blacks work, dine, and play together side by side. They judge one another not

It was not until earlier this year, that women's golf took a leaping step in the right direction when professional golfer and top LPGA player, Annika Sorenstam was told she could play against the men in a PGA tournament. Many people predicted how they thought Sorenstam would do when she teed-off against some of the best male golfers in the world. Some people had positive encouragement to contribute while others were chauvinistic and down-right rude.

Phil Mickelson, 2nd in the overall moneymaking standings last year, had no problem playing against a woman and claimed that he thought Sorenstam would end up 20th overall, when she predicted herself to be 28th. Other golf professionals were not so eager to give Sorenstam the benefit of the doubt. Vijah Singh actually resigned from the tournament because he felt he could not play with a women. He claimed that Sorenstam simply "did not belong" in a men's tournament.

Success and Equality

Success and Equality

When you view life as a journey, you start to realise that you do not have to repeat your limiting or negative patterns. You start to look at how you make decisions and how you take your Self forward. You start to teach your Self that holding the true nature of who you are - which is successful - is the main condition for your engagement at all levels. Do this and watch the change.

Even one day of holding the thought of your personal non-judgmental innocence and success for future endeavours becomes a stepping stone whereby an unyielding future can begin to be unravelled, without compromising the truth of who you are and with the acceptance that everybody fights the very same hard battle of anxiety and doubt.

Regardless of apparent success, fame or fortune everybody, just by human nature, will at some point experience the grip of Self-doubt.

By seeing your Self truthfully, competent and whole, you start to see others - regardless of difference - in that same frame. We are all striving to overcome the same difficulties, which simply amount to nothing more than being human and recognising it.

With greater Self-love you can now see your world, not so much as a place where you are held but more as a classroom of Self-fulfilling completion, an adventure of fun and not fear.

There is a choice in terms of your decision-making here and that choice is yours alone. You can choose emptiness, which is simply paralysing your Self and reducing all forms of creativity to almost nothing. That emptiness then becomes a smokescreen in front of your true potential, which is always intact. It's just a matter of having the confidence to show it.

Or you can choose the opposite to the fear by engaging without agendas in the knowledge that, regardless of where you are right now, you have an alternative which does not limit your true potential and is based on the fairness of who we all are and where exploitation or taking advantage is not part of the process.

In other words, the fairness and understanding you show your Self becomes the fairness and understanding you show others and, ultimately, the fairness and understanding the world will show you.

Then every situation and everybody is coming from a position of equality. When you go to your next meeting, in terms of a practical example, realise that - regardless of inner feelings, regardless of previous experience - there is now a decision to make and that's a decision that's made on equality, an equality of purpose, an equality of place.

So now you're giving your Self an assurance as opposed to a warning.

This consistency creates the status of truthfulness. Truth is eternal and cannot be changed. Now within that process - where you have broken the loop - you have ultimately increased the stability and the ability going forward. We learn this by virtue of the fact that we want to learn it. Be optimistic and give your Self a chance, as opposed to
