Songwriting Instruction – What to Write About?

Songwriting Instruction - What to Write About?

So, you want to write a song but don't know where to start or what to write about. Well, you're not alone. Sitting there staring at a blank piece of paper or computer screen is something that happens to all of us. In this article, I'm going to give you a few ideas for coming up with things to write about. Hopefully, these tips will get you on your way to writing your first great song.

Do me a favor. Right now...turn on the radio. I don't care what station it is. It can be rock, country, R&B, or easy listening for all I care. Just turn on the radio and wait until a song comes on. When it does, listen to the lyrics. Yeah, I know...a lot of songs have lyrics that are impossible to understand. This is especially true with speed metal. Anyway, listen to the lyrics. What is the singer singing about? Write down the general topic. After you're done, pick another song and do the same thing. Keep doing this until you have a list of about 20 or 30 topics.

If you listen to enough songs, you will begin to see patterns. Over the 45 years that I've been listening to music, the categories that seem to pop up the most are love, hate, overcoming adversity, war, poverty, nostalgia, novelty songs, charity and giving to others, and some very obtuse themes that are quite hard to categorize. These main themes should give you plenty of ammunition to use for your songwriting arsenal.

But if listening to songs on the radio isn't enough, go look at your own life. Certainly you've had experiences in your life. The older you are, the more experiences you're sure to have had. Many times, a personal story, whether it's sad, funny, or overcoming your own adversity, is going to be perfect material for a great song. As a matter of fact, some of the best songs ever written were written from personal experience. For example, Harry Chapin's song "Taxi" was written loosely based from his personal experience at the United States Air Force Academy.

The key to coming up with an idea is to clear your mind and not censor yourself. Too many people say, "That's a dumb idea" before they even give it a chance. Don't do it! Let yourself be a kid again. Kids will say and do anything and not think about looking or acting stupid. As a songwriter, sometimes we have to do the same thing.

Songwriting Instruction – Your Launch Point

Songwriting Instruction - Your Launch Point

In this installment of my songwriting instruction, we're going to actually get into the meat of the songwriting process itself...beginning with the launch point. What exactly is the launch point? Well, it's something that I have found to be most helpful in writing songs and giving me more ideas than I can possibly think of. The methods of launching your songwriting process should give you sufficient inspiration to write any song at any time. So let's get started.

Launching the songwriting process is very similar to launching any writing process. You need inspiration. It's very hard to stare at a blank piece of paper and come up with ideas. So we need some tools to give us those ideas. For writing songs, those tools are the starting points we use to come up with a song.

For example, we could begin writing our song by coming up with a set of lyrics first. Some people have a much easier time writing words than writing music. So by coming up with lyrics, or even just a simple poem, this can inspire us to then come up with a melody to fit that tune. The words we write (happy, sad, etc.) will many times dictate the kind of music we write. Certainly you're not going to write a feel good tune to lyrics where a man is mourning the loss of a loved one. Words are powerful, so use them to influence your music.

Another way to come up with a tune is to sit down at the piano or pick up the guitar, and start playing some notes or even whole chord progressions. If you listen to a lot of hard rock songs, most of these usually start out just that way...with a standard progression that ends up being wrapped up with a simple melody. If you took apart many hard rock tunes, you'd soon discover how simple they really are. What makes them "sell" is the arrangement, which includes additional lead lines, sound effects and so on. Truth is, most hard rock would sound almost comical if played on a piano with no drums, bass and additional enhancements. Think I'm kidding? Go pick up a collection of hard rock tunes in sheet music and bring it home to bang out on your piano. Don't say I didn't warn you.

There are other methods to get started with writing tunes. You can find more of them below at my personal blog.

Once you find your launch point...the rest of it will just fall into place.

Songwriting Instruction – Arrangements

Songwriting Instruction - Arrangements

Did you ever listen to one of those full blown orchestrated tunes and then after hearing a stripped down version it just didn't have the same zing? The truth is, a lot of songs would be just plain boring as heck were it not for the arrangement. The trick is finding the right arrangement for the song you've written. It's not as easy as you might think. Lots of professional arrangements, such as George Martin's overdone strings on the Beatles' "Long And Winding Road" have been slammed by critics. So don't be too hard on yourself if your first efforts aren't award winning. Hopefully, this article will get you on the right track.

What I usually do when trying to think of an arrangement for a song is try to hear what it sounds like in my head. For certain types of songs, such as ballads, a safe bet would be a nice soft string arrangement. If you're writing a country song, a pedal steel guitar and fiddle will probably fit nicely. If you're writing a hard rock tune, a couple of fuzz guitars, Hammond B3 Organ and some booming drums just might do the trick. Sure, this is all pretty stereotypical, but all these arrangements are great starting points.

The key to making your arrangement truly original is adding something unexpected to it. Take that great Yes tune, "Owner Of A Lonely Heart." It was pretty typical Yes stuff until the break came and we hear the horn hits. Everybody was talking about it because it was so different...especially for them. Soon, many groups were actually copying this sound in all kinds of genres. And it doesn't take much. A sound, an instrumentation, sometimes even just an effect can make all the difference in the world.

If you're stuck for an arrangement, think about the kind of song you're writing and listen to other songs in that genre.

Naturally, you want to look at the lyrics you've written to see what kind of sound would fit them best. Some lyrics can be interpreted in many ways, but then you have a few that lend themselves to only one sound. Many Gothic Rock lyrics are like that.

Bottom line is this. If the arrangement doesn't fit, and more importantly enhance your song, the song itself can end up on the cutting room floor with all the other table scraps.
